Surface to Air was born out of a beat up old loft in Union Square, NY in 1996. Its initial members began to work together as artists, and the space quickly transformed itself into a cultural breeding ground for other new and emerging artists to come and create and exhibit their work in an environment that supported them. This was the birthplace for a new underground movement. With the recognition of the talent that was being displayed by the various members, the interest of the public was piqued, and various characters began coming to the space as a place to witness the new avant-garde in its formation. From Harmony Korine to Donald Baechler to Alfredo Martinez, you never knew who was going to stop by and what would happen when they did.
A more formal extension of the original Surface to Air, the LLC was founded in 2000 as a means by which to take what were intangible ideas on the role of art in commercial communications and make something more concrete out of them. A Paris studio was opened and the New York base of operations moved into SoHo. As the Surface to Air team grew, so did its desire to achieve more lofty goals and in 2001 Surface to Air transformed their studio in Paris into an all-in-one art gallery, boutique and design studio. It was during this time that Pour La Victoire was published, a massive leather bound art book centering around the concept of “victory” as the end result of the creation of art. Featuring over 80 artists, it was intrinsic to showcasing the Surface to Air vision to the rest of the globe.
In the years that have since followed, the members of Surface to Air have been developing into a more sophisticated means those very same ideas which originally inspired it - that of finding a unique place where true creativity and artistic expression meets the commercial palate of the global community at large. Branching out into all forms of communication, Surface to Air has now published 3 books of art, currently create a full mens and womens clothing collection, and has art directed and consulted with brands such as Nike, adidas, North Face, HBO, Atlantic records, Vice, and Sony - just to name a few - and continues to exhibit their artwork worldwide. With studios in New York, Stockholm, Paris and Tokyo, Surface to Air has its ear to the ground and its hands in the fire, forging new ground as the 21st century cultural communicators, shaping a new tradition in a space where creativity and commerce meet.
